Mermaid Fish Restaurant, Morley, Leeds

We're big fans of Fish and Chips. Queen's Drive in Ossett has been our favourite until now, but it has been usurped. We went to the Mermaid last Saturday lunchtime, prior to shopping at the next door Asda, and enjoyed our usual Haddock and Chips, Tea or Coffee, Bread and Butter. There's not much to say about this kind of food, but if there is a point just between undercooking and overcooking a piece of fish, the Mermaid's fryer has found it. Cracking open the batter revealed the still integrated flaky structure of the fish. The batter had done its job of protecting the fish from the oil, so the full taste of the Haddock was still there to enjoy. Delicate pieces of Turbot wrapped round Crab meat in Michelin-starred restaurants are not cooked better than the Haddock served here. The total bill was about £21.00. Picture to follow when Mary returns from London with the camera phone......aah, here she comes now:

  1. That looks bloody good, think I may have to take a trip out to Morley for a fish supper.

  2. You're right, there's not much to say about this type of food, but when it's done right, it's the best meal on the planet, and when it's done badly, it's, well, it's unspeakable.

Fortunately, we're not short of one or two great fish and chip places round here, my current fave being Bryan's in Headingley, mainly because if we go there, I get to sneakily combine it with a trip to the magnificent Beer Ritz over the road.

I'm supporting local businesses. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it...
