The Brunswick, Derby

The Brunswick is more or less opposite the railway station in Derby. It's a pub building with its own brewery in among the historic Railway Terrace properties. It doesn't really do food, though I had a packet of wonderful Pork Scratchings, but it is primarily known as a place you can find a wide range of properly kept real ales. You can see the range on offer from the blackboard in the photograph. I noticed that there were no "nitro keg" ales available, so you would be unable to get a pint of smooth here. I think there was one lager available, but the tap handle was more or less invisible, being below bar level. It's a temple to real ale, and to the Derby railway industry. I didn't spot any cutlery at all.

Darley's, Derby

This the first restaurant we've reviewed that is outside Yorkshire, but it's one we go back to again and again. We met and married while living in Derby, and this has been a favourite of ours for many years. The location is perfect, in what is probably Derby's nicest suburb, overlooking a weir on the River Derwent. We go for Sunday lunch fairly regularly, it's comfortable, with friendly service and we've never been been disappointed. Mary had a Goats Cheese and Asparagus Starter, while I had a Trout roulade. Both good. The main business of the meal followed, and if you've read the earlier reviews, you might have noticed that Mary tends to choose Pork, whereas I tend to choose redder meat, like beef or venison. Today followed the usual pattern. The pork was extremely tender, and the crackling perfect. The beef was presented in an unusual way - some cabbage was covered by an upturned yorkshire pudding with the beef on top. There were roasted swede and parsnip round the outside, all in a deeply flavoured jus. Everything was well up to the standards we have come to expect.

Then the Pork










This was my dessert - Coconut parfait with Cocoa Sorbet, Roast Pineapple and a Pineapple Crisp, with a spiced syrup.

Then coffee and petit-fours on the terrace. Overall a delightful Sunday lunch, for about £50.







This particular occasion was for our twelfth wedding anniversary, though it was a couple of days early. On the actual day itself we decided to go out again. We thought we'd try The Reliance in Leeds, based on the recommendation in The Globe Troffers' Blog. I didn't feel I could take photographs there because it was so light and bright and we were at a small table in the middle of the room. It would have been too intrusive.
