For Mary's birthday this year we went to the nearest Michelin-starred restaurant we had not yet visited. That we hadn't is surprising, given that we met and married while living Derby and lived in Derbyshire for many years. Baslow is a beautiful small town in the Peak District and the restaurant is in a Country House hotel about half a mile from one of the main entrances to the Chatsworth Estate.
There were some homemade crisps with a creme fraiche and caraway dip in the lounge to start, then some treacle and stout bread, and hazelnut bread rolls, and an amuse bouche of tomato and basil gazpacho. We started with Goat's Cheese soufflé and Quail Terrine. As usual, for the main course Mary had the Pork and I had the Beef. For dessert we had the Apricot and Hazelnut Tart and the Pistachio and White Chocolate delice. Tea and coffee were both excellent and the salted caramel home made chocolates (no photo unfortunately) were amazing. I was also delighted to find that they served beer from their local Thornbridge brewery. Service was excellent throughout.
By a complete coincidence, Jay Rayner had visited here for for Sunday Lunch a few weeks earlier and appears to have eaten from almost the same menu. I think his review hits the nail on the head. Here's a link to it:
